[It was the best of the times. It was the worst of the times.]
This project exanimates the possibility in developing self-driven local economies, with cultural diversity and light industry in To Kwa Wan 13 Streets, and improving community life for children and elderly. The project is to provide an alternative mode of living and business in against the notorious property hegemony, and to reintegrate a testing ground for nurturing family-sized industries and local craftsmanship.
[Speed, Density, Diversity and Time]
Hong Kong architecture is famous for its speed, the pace of living, together with its high density to generate the beauty of efficiency. Unfortunately, the irreversible high land rent is slowly killing the diversity of space and cultural practice in the future. When the monotonous architecture is turning into a commodity, it is destroying the unmeasurable and intangible value of family-oriented innovations and experience. So, this project aims at regenerating spatial diversity in co-working, recreation and institutional usages.
[A Place to share the knowledge]
In the past, local people worked in strong community bonding inside these 13 streets with operating small-scaled industries, in producing light bulbs and plastic products. At present, the release of height restriction encourages private developers to redevelop the site with various pencil towers and escalate rental price, making the flats highly unaffordable, thus creating unfairness to grassroots and underprivileged.
[The Return of Space for the people and by the people]
Can we generate a testing ground for local innovative and experiment new things, with other diversified jobs to diminish social isolation? Facing with this situation, they have nowhere to go except in this wonderland, the last spot to have their freedom of living. With its permeable building clusters with residential, creative and light industry, it brings back the cultural versatility for grassroots. At the same time, some alleys are preserved for communal relationship; the alternation achieves new programmatic approach for collective housing towers. It is the last spot for working and gathering, in extending their homes to accommodate growing families and business.
[It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.]
