Thesis Project: The WWII Memorial Museum in Mid-Level Hong Kong
A place for war memorial
War Memorial Museum_Mid Level
This thesis aims to discuss the conflicts of aggression and cruelty of WWII, by the creation of sequential architectural volume of light and space, to reflect the dirt of sin and guilt in war crimes, thus allowing people to put down the pain for the past war-memory.
It is a memorial museum for the innocents and sacrificed under the wars of Imperial Japanese occupation “3-Year-8-month” in Hong Kong during WWII. The tower design approach is implying that the soul of pass-away is to return to heaven and reach eternity. At the end, the knot between aggressors and victims is to be released by means of architectural spaces and sequential journey.
This thesis holds the concept of traditional Chinese philosophy of “Twists and Turns” (起承轉合) (1) Start (起), (2) Continue (承), (3) Twist (轉) and (4) Eternity (合). This concept brings out the journey to overcome the miserable life during the war times in Hong Kong under Japanese Occupation, from the dark era to the bright liberation. It is a museum complex, including education and exhibition spaces, memorial garden and chapel, in allowing the public to understand this hidden history of Hong Kong.
